Various Finish Characteristics

Solvent (oil) Base Finishes
Solvent based (oil modified) finishes have been commonly used on hardwood floors for many years. This product will provide good protection for 2-3 years before maintenance is expected. They also typically rate from 450-650 on the VOC scale; or somewhat toxic. There is a 10-14 hour dry time associated with this product and it is recommended that the homeowner vacate the home for several days during the finishing process. 100% cure is not reached until 2 weeks after finish.

Water Base Finishes
Water base finishes have been commonly used on hardwood floors in Sweden for many years, and more recently in the US for the past 10-15 years. These products will provide excellent protection for your floor for 5-10 years before maintenance is required.

Most of these products rate below 100 on the VOC scale, are very non-toxic and fast drying, meaning you never have to leave your home. These finishes have a 2-3 hour dry time and are fully cured in 2-3 days. They also provide higher resistance to wear and possess non ambering, U-V protection.

Formaldehyde-free and odor-free, water base finishes provide higher resistance to household chemicals. During the finishing process you may multiple coat in one day. They are easy to maintain, plus, your home carries the prestige of having an authentic Swedish finish.

There is no finish made that won't scratch, scuff or wear. The commercial Swedish finish appears to be the strongest on the market today. Therefore, it is all we use. Specifically, BonaKemi's "Traffic Finish."
