Wood Species & CharacteristicsWood flooring is made from just about any species of wood known to man. You may be surprised at the wide variety of woods commonly used for flooring. It's really just a matter of what wood species suits your taste, and works well in your home. The most common species used for wood flooring is a red or white oak. This is the floor that you see in most of your friends' or families' homes. However, woods are available in a variety of grades and sizes. Other species commonly used are Ash, Maple, Pine, Australian Cypress, Walnut, Beech and Birch. There are many additional exotic species not mentioned here. Choosing a species of wood for your home is largely a personal decision. Certain species of wood may provide a very nice appearance, but may not be the best choice for flooring in your home. When choosing the right species of wood for your floor, consider the following:
